Japanese Tea Sets and the Japanese Tea Ceremony
Japanese Tea Sets are an integral part of the Japanese tea ceremony. These ceremonies were a kind of choreographed ritual. The server would prepare and then present a type of green tea called Macha and traditional Japanese treats. The entire process is more about the ritual and tradition then it was about the actual drinking of tea. History The ceremony itself dates back to the end of the 14th century when members of the upper class would gather to drink powered green tea. It was the job of the host of these gatherings to make certain that the atmosphere was serene and relaxed. To successfully host a Japanese tea ceremony you would need knowledge of: 1. Calligraphy 2. Flower arranging 3. Ceramics. All of these disciplines are necessary to help the host create the right environment. In terms of the actual ceremony, the host must also know how to cook a special meal called Kaiseki, which compliments the tea service. The host must know which utensils and tea items to use. Furniture 4. Charcoal items 5. Brooms and boxes The Meaning of Tea Ceremonies There are several reasons Japanese families continue to host tea ceremonies to this day. One reason is that they are simply a good excuse to get together with friends and family members and have a good time. It is also true that these ceremonies are entertaining. The host who can put on the best show receives respect from his or her peers. Some of the more traditional ceremonies still emphasize long periods of silent contemplation while the tea is drunk. The serving of tea by the host also shows respect to her guests and strengthens the bonds of friendship.
