The Victorian Tea Party

The Victorian Tea Party has traditionally been known as a women's social gathering, but of course men are welcome.

No cable news networks blaring stock reports, no laptops, no cell phone ringing. It is a time for conversation, laughter and tea.

Floral Arrangement

Decorations

A Victorian Tea Party is a semi-formal occasion. You're trying to create an atmosphere of a slower, more intimate age. A time of simple luxuries, manners and elegance.

It is time to pull out your most fancy, formal dining room set. Use linen tablecloths, cloth napkins, and lace (or paper) doilies.

Set up flower bouquets as centerpieces, play classical music softly in the background. Possibly add perfume to the room with potpourri or scented candles.

Tableware

This is the perfect time to use your fancy china, silver cutlery, and crystal serving dishes. The only real requirement is a teapot, teacups, and saucers.

If you plan to throw tea parties on a regular basis, always keep an eye peeled for elegant but inexpensive tableware like fancy bowls, platters, and serving trays.

Beverages

Not everyone likes the same type of tea. I think it is best to keep your tea pot full of hot water, set out a bowl or basket of various teabags, and let your guests chose their own.

Many companies sell "sampler packs" with teabags in half a dozen flavors. They can be found in any supermarket. Tea Crumpets

Refreshments

Good tea party refreshments are light finger foods, small sandwiches of egg salad or chicken salad.

Also, you can serve rolls, buns, muffins, cookies, and cakes (preferably non-sticky ones like pound or coffee cake).

Another famous tea bread is crumpet which you can find in a well-stocked grocery store.

In case you're wondering, crumpets are very much like English muffins, only one-sided and with holes in the top.

It would be nice if you and your friends can have a tea party on a regular basis, once a month or so. Simply rotate who's turn it is to host the party and enjoy the magic of tea.
