Why Use a Tea Tray

Tea Tray

A tea tray is nice to have to serve your guests tea.

It can hold not only the tea pot but also the cups, saucers, creamer and the sugar bowl.

Many of the tea sets come with a tray already. Of course, any nice serving tray will do the job too.

Types of Trays

Tea sets come made in different materials. The main material that is used today though is ceramic, fine china, metal or sterling silver.

  • The metal ones are usually plated to look like sterling silver.

  • Ceramic and metal ones are the least expensive. The fine china and sterling silver ones are more expensive.

  • Sterling ones can be quite valuable as collector items. Just make sure you are not buying a plated metal opposed to the real sterling silver. You could be paying more than you should for the set.

Now some of the tea sets whether they are English style or the more Asian style can have trays.

The cups on the English sets will have handles on them. The Asian sets can have cups with or without handles.

This makes them easy to put out as a decoration in between serving tea with them. You can arrange the tea service neatly on the tray and place it on your shelf or table.

The trays are usually decorated in the same pattern as the tea set is.

If there is a floral design on the tea-service pieces made from china or ceramic, the tray will also have a floral design.

With the metal or sterling silver the trays will have a design complimenting the design on the service pieces.
English Tea Set Do you serve tea somewhere besides your kitchen?

It is just easier to transport everything when you have a tea tray with your tea set.

If one does not come with it there are serving trays you can buy. Most large enough to hold most tea sets.

Sometimes you can have coffee pots though that come with the tea sets. This can call for a larger tray.

You might also be serving dessert or snacks with the tea too. So buy a large serving tray and possibly a smaller one too if your set does not come with one.

This way you can use the smaller tray when you are only serving tea. The larger one for serving coffee and/or other things with the tea.

    Serving Carts

Some people like serving carts over trays though. This way they can just load them up and push the cart to where it needs to be. These are nice too because no lifting is involved.

You will find many marvelous designs as you shop for tea sets. No matter if they come with a tea tray or not.

As collectibles these sets are sometimes worth a lot of money. Other times they are passed down through the generations in a family.
